The way it is written is poetic but it is still showing what the main differences between East and West are and how we are unable to understand the beauty of the moment, the beauty of present time, which is in the center of the tea ceremony.

Western people are so determined to stick to their past and trying so hard to conquer their future that they forget to enjoy the only time they really can feel, the only time in which they can do something: the present time.

From Taoist and Zen upbringings, Teaism not a typo! Broken into brief segments the work includes: 1. The Cup of Humanity. The Schools of Tea.

Taoism and Zennism. The Tea Room. Art Appreciation. The second part of the work deals with the beginnings of tea. It focuses on preparation: boiled Sang , whipped Tong and steeped Ming - Okakura acknowledges that the Western world is bereft of the prior two methods because Europe entered the picture at the end of the Ming Dynasty in China: He elaborates on the preparation methods, detailing them finely and with the care one would expect of a teaist.

The fourth section puts on display the tea-room and it introduces the tea ceremony. Much time is given the architectural process and much thought put into criticizing Western architecture for using oft repeated styles and this is usually coupled with, upon strolling the inside, a lack of modesty so great as it regards material matter, that one is stricken by its indecency.

Whereas the tea-room was a small, non-descript, humility begging structure, which may have one or two decorations and seat no more than usually 5 at a time.

A very intimate gathering, and one full of custom as Okakura goes on to explain in the sixth section during his analysis of the use of flowers during the tea ceremony.

Sections 5 and 6 are brief and deal mainly with what truly appreciating the respective titles means art, flowers and their usefulness and symbolism in Japanese culture, and specifically as it may relate to the tea rooms.

But Okakura finds that to be a topic which would be too long discussed and probably insubstantiate a work about tea.

The work concludes with a summary of how a tea-master lives his life and directs his abilities. There is found here much accreditation, justly due, to the inventions of Japans tea-masters.

We are wicked because we are frightfully self-conscious. First off, not really about tea. It's an overview of the history and philosophy of China and Japan through talking about tea.

Okakura is a Japanese author who learned English at a young age, written in I found this book by clicking around on some links about Wabi-Sabi and because of my love for Chinese Tea I decided to read this one.

The tea ceremony's I have been involved in are certainly rich, simple, peaceful experiences, it has a similar effect as yoga on mind and body.

I hope to drink several cups of various asian varieties of tea every day for the rest of my life. I would recommend this short book to anyone interested in Asia, it's history and philosophy, and as well, it's tea.

Especially the westerner. The author being Japanese but well versed in western thought through his early command of the english language offers a great rebuttal to the attitude of the west towards Asia, which I wish so bad us westerners could catch on to.

That can be found especially in the beginning, but certainly throughout. At the fifth cup I am purified; the sixth cup calls me to the realms of the immortals.

I only feel the breath of cool wind that rises in my sleeves. It's way different than the caffeine high from coffee as well.

It's a much more hydrated, non-jittery feeling. The author describes the tea ceremony as being derived from the practice of Buddhist monks drinking tea before their altars.

It can easily be a spiritual, life-giving experience. It would not be the Tao unless they laughed at it. Why do men and women like to advertise themselves so much?

Is it not but an instinct derived from the days of slavery? See all reviews from the United States. Top international reviews. Enough has been said about the book itself, by Kakuzo Okakura, and I don't feel I can add anything of value to this.

I wanted to briefly mention that the disappointing quality of this edition highlights Penguin's long recognised problem of spotty quality.

The paper here is very cheap, making the book floppy and the cover is made from a cheap glossy stock. Inside, the text looks like it's been printed on as cheaply as possible, is blurry and a faded black.

I own a lot of the Penguin Classics and have noticed that the quality isn't the same across, which is disappointing.

The quality ranges from perfectly sharp text printed on good quality paper and a nice cover stock, to books that look almost like fakes in comparison.

Maybe they've become too big, so poor quality slips through, unnoticed. Thank you for your feedback. Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again.

That said, however, it is absolutely essential reading for anyone with an interest in the tea ceremony, Sen no Rikyu, or wabi-sabi as an aesthetic.

His thesis that wabi Tea culture is 'Daoism in disguise' is extremely compelling, and his depiction of Rikyu's practice of Tea culture is vivid, immediate, and deeply poetic.

Though a personal literary essay rather than an academically rigorous text, if you're interested in Tea culture I can't recommend it highly enough.

One person found this helpful. I adore Kauzo Okakura's authorship, but the quality of paperback version really lets his work down.

You whoever is responsible for this product should be ashamed about printing something as beautiful as 'the book of tea', the book of books on the aesthetics of traditional Japanese tea ceremony, in something so cheap, careless and tasteless as this.

Given the price I was expecting something simple and less durable, but not in my wildest dreams did I suspect that I would be able to count the pixels on the cover.

This book design is a testimony to the ills of mass production. It is everything the tea making ritual is not.

I am so deeply disappointed. I ordered this as a gift for a friend who is a tea lover but I was very disappointed by the quality of the product I received.

It is pretty much a digital colour copy of the book. The image on the front cover is pixelated because of the poor resolution.

The other edition has a brown cover with an image within a square on the cover. This is a fantastic book that is well presented as part of penguins little black classics.

It gives an insightful look into spiritism that is associated with tea and a slight critique on western tea practices.

A great read for anyone interested in tea, Taoism and eastern versus western culture. Load more international reviews.

This is a most delightful book for anybody who is interested in Japanese esthetics, inherent in their traditional art of living. The text sheds light on many differt aspects of Japanese creation, sensitivity towards nature and the culminating sense of the sublime which human beings can achieve.

The principles seem to have travelled trough centuries of war and catastrophies and still remain intact. A gentle yet powerful breath of air, full of awareness for human nature.

The essence of the philosophies are still valid in today's Japan and are soothing in the present state of the globe.

Read this in one sitting. It is akin to meditation, in that while reading, the prose was so beautiful, I felt like in a dream world, peace, tranquillity, the noise outside my window neither bothering or distracting me.

The philosophy of 'teaism' should not be discounted lightly. Sometimes a little unclear in translation of ideas across the cultural gap but overall a very good little book.

Useful to see how the Japanese consider Zen not as a religious idea but as a way to enlightenment possible even through every day sorts of things like making tea.

Fantastic, history and culture all rolled in to one book! Very interesting to read there is more to tea then meets the eye, definitely want to visit japan more now and China!

As a drinker of tea, this book is really useful for me. A good piece from a great writer. All tea drinkers should read this book.

Okakura had been taught at a young age to speak English and was proficient at communicating his thoughts to the Western mind.

In his book, he discusses such topics as Zen and Taoism , but also the secular aspects of Tea and Japanese life. The book emphasizes how Teaism taught the Japanese many things; most importantly, simplicity.

That was in Sein und Zeit Being and Time was published in and made Heidegger famous. I have heard many stories of this kind from Professor Ito and checked their veracity.

I recounted this story at a reception held after a series of lectures I gave in at the University of Heidelberg at the invitation of Hans-Georg Gadamer.

I must have said too much and may even have said that Heidegger was a plagiarist Plagiator. It Teaism inculcates purity and harmony, the mystery of mutual charity, the romanticism of the social order.

It is essentially a worship of the Imperfect, as it is a tender attempt to accomplish something possible in this impossible thing we know as life.
